Oceania bucket list destinations
It’s really difficult to try and keep to a manageable number of Oceania bucket list destinations. Realistically I don’t think there is a single Pacific Island that I don’t want to visit but I won’t try to justify them all here!
New Zealand
Looks stunning, the scenery is amazing – I’d love to see it in real life.
Australia
The Australian mainland scares me a bit, everything on the land and in the surrounding sea seems to want to kill you. The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are an Australian oversea territory that I’d really like to visit though – 27 tiny islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean, they look like a postcard and are so remote.
Pacific Islands
I’m bundling these all together as otherwise I’d have a huge list and no real chance of seeing them all, at least this way I can visit one and say I’ve completed it! There are so many remarkable things to see within the tiny dots that make up the various Pacific islands.
Kiritimati – fishing and total remoteness.
The Marquesas Islands – wild horses on the beach.
Pentecost Island, Vanuatu – land diving (like bungee jumping but hitting the ground!).
Tahiti – black sand beaches and luxury.
Pitcairn Island – a British Overseas Territory, populated by descendants of the mutineers from The Bounty, William Bligh’s famous ship.
Bora Bora – tropical paradise.
It is possible to do a tour on a supply ship of multiple South Pacific islands which looks remarkable. This lasts for 11-12 days and takes in 8 or so islands, giving you time to explore each location while the crew unload the cargo from the ship.
Next up are my weird and wonderful places – not particularly realistic at the time of writing but still intriguing and firmly on the list, see this final part here.
